label
EN
n.
The principal means by which a wine producer or bottler can communicate with a potential customer and consumer. 1
The amount of information a wine label displays, vary according to the quality level as well as the wine and alcohol laws of a particular country. In many cases they also differ within a country. [...] In spite of all the different possibilities, most commercial wine labels are expected to display the following basic information:
Name of the wine [...]
Wine designation [...]
Geographical indication [...]
Alcoholic strength [...]
Volume [...]
Vintage [...]
Varietal information [...]
Name and address of the producer [...]
With increasing consumer awareness and popularity, wine producers around the world, especially in the 'new world' are also focusing on creative 'back labels' as an effective communication tool. In their most comprehensive form, the back labels will often summarize the entire wine's profile. 2
A commercial wine label often carries details that are not only useful to trace a wine's origin but also acts as an effective communication tool for the producer. 3

C.1300, "narrow band or strip of cloth," oldest use is as a technical term in heraldry, from O.Fr. label, lambel "ribbon, fringe" (Fr. lambeau "strip, rag, shred, tatter"), possibly from Frankish *labba (cf. O.H.G. lappa "flap"), from P.Gmc. *lapp- (see lap (n.)). Later "dangling strip of cloth or ribbon used as an ornament in dress," "strip attached to a document to hold a seal" (both early 15c.), and general meaning "tag, sticker, slip of paper" (1670s). 5
