Definizione

[...] wines that are concentrated and have character, yet are shy in aroma or flavor. Closed wines may open up to reveal more flavors and aromas with aging or aeration.1

Nota

A wine is described as “closed” when it is not expressing its full potential. For example, the aromas may be faint [...], and/or the fruit flavors on the palate are overpowered by the tannins, acidity, and other preservative components. Though there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of excitement coming from the wine’s smell, or in the way it tastes, the fruit is expected to come out in full force in a few years [...] the wine will “open up” after some aging. 2
Young wines often close up about 12-18 months after bottling, and depending on the vintage and storage conditions, remain in such a state for several years to more than a decade.3

Contesto

So how do the wine experts know the difference between a “closed, tightly wound wine” and a wine that’s simply not good? 2
