dioecious
EN
Adj.
Of or relating to organisms, especially plants, having the male and female reproductive organs borne on separate individuals of the same species; sexually distinct. 1
A plant species is said to be dioecious when its male and female reproductive organs are carried on separate individual plants of the same species. When a plant species is dioecious, at least one male plant must be present in a group for the fruit-bearing female plants to be pollinated. 2
Consider the unusual-looking actinidia, especially the species Actinidia kolomikta. This spectacular vine, which is native to Asia, is a vigorous grower. It usually evokes some sort of comment, for it has variegated foliage: green, pink and white on the same leaf. The male form of this dioecious vine has the white or pink-tip leaves. 3
