Definizione

Collective term for pollen grains which carry the male gametes in sexual propagation. 1

Nota

Pollen develops within sacs of the anther by a number of cell divisions leading to the pollen which has prolific cell divisions. Mature grains have a sculptured surface typical for each species. When the grains germinate, a pollen tube emerges and grows into the surface of the stigma and down the style. 1

Contesto

Despite the apparent insignificance of airborne pollen to successful pollination, they were able to predict wine production from pollen counts in dryer climatic regions of Portugal. 2
