Definizione

Fruity odour detected especially in great Burgundy wines, reminiscent of the smell of morello, a variety of cherry which when very ripe, has a wild, almost musky taste. 1

Nota

Dark mahogany red cherry which has a very sour taste. Its juice is commonly used in making liqueurs and brandies. 2

Morello cherries have a deep crimson flesh and rich wine red juice. English Morello is an old variety, grown for centuries. It has tart, aromatic flesh. The juice is abundant and excellent for cooking and pie making. The large heart shaped dark red fruit is free stone and ripens in August, at the end of the cherry season. The tree habit is small, easily maintained at 8 feet or less.3

Etimologia

Morello: Italian, from Vulgar Latin *maurellus, diminutive of Latin Maurus, ‘inhabitant of Mauretania’. The plant was so called after its color.6

Cherry: from Anglo-French cherise (taken as plural), from Old North French cherise, from Vulgar Latin *ceresia, from late Greek kerasian “cherry”, from Greek kerasos “cherry tree”, possibly from a language of Asia Minor. Old English had ciris “cherry” from West Germanic form of the Vulgar Latin word, but it died out after the Norman invasion and was replaced by the French word. 7
