Definizione

Any of the narrow strips of wood or narrow iron plates placed edge to edge to form the sides, covering, or lining of a vessel (as a barrel) or structure. 1

Nota

Barrels made from hand split staves are better in every way than those which use machine-sawn staves, but are more expensive. Similarly barrels made over a fire are generally preferred to those made using steamed staves. In each case the heat is necessary to allow the staves to be bent into shape. 2

Contesto

The staves of a barrel are cut (or, better, riven) straight, then curved by being heated on a fire. 3
