Definizione

Part of a still, made of copper, which has a rounded belly like a marrow (hence its other name “curcubite”) in which substances are introduced to be distilled (pomace, wine, etc.).1

Nota

[…] The pot still is an essential element in the production of cognac and other fine brandies. It is filled with wine and then heated, relying on the simple physical fact that alcohol boils at lower temperature than water. The alcohol fumes are then trapped at the top of the vessel and cooled.2

Contesto

You will also receive an instruction manual providing you with directions on how to operate your new 8 gallon pot still.3

Etimologia

"vessel," from late Old English pott and Old French pot "pot, container, mortar" (also in erotic senses), both from a general Low Germanic (cf. Old Frisian pott, Middle Dutch pot) and Romanic word from Vulgar Latin *pottus, of uncertain origin, said by Barnhart and OED to be unconnected to Late Latin potus "drinking cup." Celtic forms are said to be borrowed from English and French.5
