Definizione

A glass bottle, often decorated, that wine or other alcoholic drinks are poured into from an ordinary bottle before serving. 1

Nota

Any container can be used as a vessel for wine, so long as it is made of an inert material and can hold at least the contents of a bottle while, ideally, leaving a considerable surface area in contact with air.

With a decanter, red wine, which can often contain sediment, is poured slowly from the bottle into the vessel. As it is transferred, the sediment remains in the original bottle, allowing for the wine that will be served to be clear of it. 2

Contesto

The first decanters were used in ancient Rome by servants to pour wine at gatherings. 3
