diagonal tasting
EN
c.n.
Evaluation of wines belonging to the same type and area but of different vintages and producers. 1
Among all comparative tasting, the diagonal one is the less common as it does not allow an efficient study because of the differences of the wines. 2
[...]; a simple diagonal tasting entails selecting a couple of wineries and tasting wines of different vintages. 3

Diagonal: 1540s (implied in diagonally), from Modern French diagonal, from Latin diagonalis, from diagonus "slanting line", from Gk. diagonios "from angle to angle", from dia- "across" + gonia "angle," related to gony "knee". As a noun, from 1570s.
Tasting: from taste (noun): c.1300, "act of tasting", from Old French tast (Mod.Fr. tât), from taster. Meaning "faculty or sense by which flavor of a thing is discerned" is attested from late 14c. Meaning "savor, sapidity, flavor" is from late 14c. Sense of "aesthetic judgment" is first attested 1670s (cf. Fr. goût, Ger. geschmack, Rus. vkus, etc.). 5
