Definizione

The wire cage that keeps a Champagne cork from popping off the bottle. 1

Nota

It consists of a lacquered steel wire loop and cage with a stamped, varnished tin plate cap that prevents the cork from splitting under pressure. 2

In the 17th century Dom Perignon introduced the wire collar, the muselet. At that time a lot of bottles were lost during production because the cork or the bottle was unable to withstand the pressure of the Champagne. Dom Perignon’s invention was a perfect solution for this and many other champagne houses quickly followed. 3

Contesto

This wired cage is officially called the ‘muselet’ and it is loosened by removing the foil and turning the wire counter-clockwise. 4
